Northwest Indiana Computational Grid

Awards ’08

The Northwest Indiana Computational Grid (NWICG) is a partnership consisting of researchers and educators at Purdue University-Calumet (Calumet), the University of Notre Dame, and Purdue University-West Lafayette (Purdue) that couples mutual interests among the three campuses with national science and research initiatives, builds a cyber-infrastructure that supports the solution of breakthrough level problems, and enables continuing world-class advances in the underlying technologies of high performance computing. It is currently operated under the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.

At Notre Dame, the NWICG project works in close collaboration with the Center for Research Computing (CRC) to enhance the research environment and enable innovative research. To support this mission, the NWICG Steering Committee at Notre Dame issued a Request for Proposals in May, 2008.

Twelve proposals were received:  seven proposals from the College of Science, four proposals from the College of Engineering and one proposal from the College of Arts and Letters. They were evaluated by a combined group of the CRC Faculty Advisory Committee and the NWICG Steering Committee with additional input from ad-hoc reviewers from Notre Dame and Purdue University as needed. The following six projects were awarded:

Each project will receive $25,000 in direct costs (salaries and benefits).  They will cover (or partially cover) the cost of a graduate student or postdoc research assistant for their project.  Those that receive funding will be asked to present their work at the next NWICG workshop and acknowledgment of the CRC and NWICG in any papers that result from their research.
