Northwest Indiana Computational Grid

Request for Proposals ’08

The Northwest Indiana Computational Grid (NWICG) is a partnership consisting of researchers and educators at Purdue University-Calumet (Calumet), the University of Notre Dame, and Purdue University-West Lafayette (Purdue) that couples mutual interests among the three campuses with national science and research initiatives, builds a cyber-infrastructure that supports the solution of breakthrough level problems, and enables continuing world-class advances in the underlying technologies of high performance computing. It is currently operated under the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.

At Notre Dame, the NWICG project works in close collaboration with the Center for Research Computing (CRC) to enhance the research environment and enable innovative research. To support this mission, the NWICG Steering Committee at Notre Dame is issuing this Request for Proposals. Funding can be requested by Notre Dame faculty members for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowships in support of research that furthers the NWICG objectives of enabling world-class advances in the technologies of grids and high performance computing and of supporting breakthrough level work in the applications of these technologies. The initial funding period is for one year starting 10/1/08 and is anticipated that two similar RFPs will be issued in 2009 and 2010. No more than one postdoctoral or graduate fellowship may be requested. This may be supplemented by an additional undergraduate summer fellowship.

Proposals should include:

  1. A project description having a maximum length of two pages, not including literature references. This should address the significance and impact of the work, any progress that has been made so far, goals that you expect the fellowship recipient(s) to accomplish, and opportunities for future external funding that might result. Any collaborative aspects of the work, with other NWICG partners or with other Notre Dame faculty, should also be described.
  2. A budget page. In addition to the budget for the fellowship(s) being requested, please also comment on any cost sharing or other leveraging involved in the support of this research.
  3. The CV of the faculty member making the request and supervising the work.

Proposals are due in electronic form by Friday, May 23 to Marcy Hull (mhull@nd.edu). They will be evaluated by a combined group of the CRC Faculty Advisory Committee and the NWICG Steering Committee with additional input from ad-hoc reviewers from Notre Dame and Purdue University as needed. Criteria (in approximate order of importance) that may be considered in evaluating the proposals include:

Announcement of awardees will be made by 6/20/08. Awardees are expected to present their work at the 2009 NWICG workshop.
